Plenty
of Paws
a unique musical group When I was still a kitten, I formed a small band with my pal, Jazz, a Maine Coon, on piano, and Mrs. Doyle, a grey parrot who was born the same week I was. Mrs. Doyle didn't turn out to be much of a singer, but has developed a unique form of drumming, which meant our combo was heavy on percussion. So we've expanded into a much larger musical society, with members not just across Canada but into the U.S. and abroad. A chorus offers caterwauling of the highest order, joined by a Senior Emeritus Purring Group and a Kitten Chorus.
Uniforms are not required, although I already have mine,
THE BAND LEADER Our featured drummer is Mrs. Doyle Pridgeon, a grey parrot who lives in Sooke, BC. Mrs. Doyle is pictured here, but her magnificent red tail feathers (the red pigments are called psittacofulvins) only show in the VIDEOS of her drumming. Shooter Stephanson, of Orleans, Ontario, was our first Director of the Main Chorus. He got us off to a great start with his experience interacting with other species, including chipmunks. His Abyssinian heritage guaranteed that musical selections will cover all nationalities. He's now retired to Director Emeritus status, ceding his place to Tango Katz, who presides from the menagerie he supervises from Fort Smith, the NorthWest Territories. Leader of the Kitten Chorus is Big Bertha, who lives in Ottawa. Her sister, Shadow, is too shy to join the group, but may linger (in the shadows, of course!). In her photo, Bertha is testing the acoustics in the new kitchen in the Reardon household. You'll see more photos of Society members on the Peter & the Wolf page, where we've just finished casting the very First Virtual Production by Plenty of Paws and a Flurry of Feathers. |

Many of our members are rescue cats, paying tribute to the origins of Simon I (who came from an ad in the Ottawa Citizen), Simon II (who was found at the Gatineau SPCA), and Yours Truly, the Number Three (Terzo), who was adopted from the Ottawa Humane Society.
But we have several with pedigrees, including Jazz (Maine Coon), Aimee (Chartreux), Omaste (LaPerm), Matisse (Burmese), Roxy (Devon Rex). There are also three without papers but with obvious purebred looks and traits: Ms. Shooter (Abyssinian), Miss Noha (Siamese), and Bigfoot (Maine Coon).
